iSSH for iPad. Pros/Cons

Hi There,

As you know, I recently purchased a Apple iPad. One of the reason I did buy it instead of another e-book reader is that it can be use for other thing’s than only reading.

One of the most important thing for me was that it can support SSH connections to other machines. At the Apple APP store, there is a APP called iSSH that you can purchase for 9.99$ which I did. The application is very interesting and easy to read on the device display either in horizontal or vertical orientation of it. The application also support X Window server that is quite useful to run GUI tools over SSH. It also support SSH tunneling as well as key’s for authentication.

Other than just SSH, iSSH also support RAW VNC connections and VNC over SSH. I didn’t however try that feature yet.

My bad comment concerning the application in general would be that it does not support some of the shortcuts while using an external keyboard with it.
Ex : CTRL-L to clear the screen or CTRL-D to log out. As well as TAB for the auto-completion and so on.

This is clearly not a iPad limitation since CTRL shortcuts are indeed supported in application such as NOTES and mail to do copy and paste for instance…

I know that I am not alone in that situation using that specific application, they have received some comments that I hope they read take action on.
This application would be awesome to me as long as they fix theses minor issues.

You can go and download the application from the Apple APP store here : iSSH APPLICATION IPAD 9.99$

Also here are 2 screen shots of horizontal and vertical console. :

My brand new iPad

iPad

iPad

Yesterday I purchased my first ebook reader thap happened to be a iPad from Apple.

I have to say that i was not sure at the beginning for 1 simple reason, the price.

So far I have to say that I am quite impressed by the quality of the product, the screen resolution and how easy for the eye is the screen; even of it’s not a polarized screen like the Kindle or Sony e-book reader.

As for writing with the onboard keyboard, well I’m getting used to it and also purchased a “Bluetooth” keyboard. So far on that side, everything is fine.

One of the reason’s I decided to purchase a iPad instead of any other book reader is that it will also let me use other apps but more specifically program editor for (X)HTLM(5),CSS,JS and so on. As well as a super neat portable SSH console screen since I’m also a sys admin. I hope this will become useful to do some quick fix while in meetings, on the go, or even to become my main portable console hardware.

Now is the time to explore all the applications I might want to get like a terminal app as mentioned above.

Oh ! Look ! There is even Apple Pages ! 😉

P.S: Written from my iPad.

iPhone 4 and Hak5

First thing first, thanks Shannon for the post on my blog. This really appreciated and surprising ! If Hak5 is willing to step by the great Montreal area in Canada, I will be glad to have the crew at home. I have a lot of space available to shoot and spare room for guest. The invitation is open when ever you want ! Unless I’m on vacation on a Mexico beach… lol

On that note, this Friday morning July 30th is the day iPhone 4 are available in Canada. (Wouhou !). So I decided to step by my local cell carrier this morning but they only opened at 10 O’clock and there was already a line up. I then changed my mind and went to the Apple store… WOOOOOOOO !!! BAD IDEA ! There was a waiting line of 4 person large and 2 block’s long !!!

I guess I will wait to get the phone after the boom and ask my local carrier to send it to me by mail…. HAAAA Sweet mail !

Hak5 Web Show

Just discovered that Tech show a couple months ago. The show is named Hak5 and it’s powered by Revision3.

They mostly talk about hardware, some ”hacking” and techie stuff. The show is pretty cool and the girl is gorgeous.

Take a loot at http://hak5.org

You might want to listen to the show’s about the WiFi Pineapple. Pretty funny “Men in the middle” process to get over wifi routers and their users.

iPhone 4G ”found” and demonstrated on Gizmodo.com

Good Monday everyone,

Today interesting news is what could be the next iPhone. It seem that someone from Apple or one of Apple manufacturers ”lost” a iPhone in the wild and that it end-up on Gizmodo web site. You can find images and video’s of the device in the URL bellow… It look’s cool.

Now let’s see what Apple and Mr. Jobs will do about that 🙂 I think some furnitures flyed in Apple office this morning… 😉

Sharepoint apps deploiement.

Today has been a bad day for me as a Sharepoint deployment manager. Seem that I had te reboot the entire pre prod web farm because of a hanged retraction. It look like even the front end web server had to be rebooted in order to have the task being dropped by Sharepoint. Even a manual operation with stsadm was not an option. Look’s like I should have remember that a reboot in a MS software world is as natural as not to in the Linux world. Still happy that this was in pre prod env.

It feel good to talk about it.
